An Honest Off-Season

2021! What a flippin' year. Looking back on it I can't quite believe what I've been up to. I represented the Great Britain Cycling Team in the MTB Marathon World Championships, raced in the MTB Marathon World Series at the Andalusia Bike Race, finished in the top 10 in two British Championships, and won the Glentress 7. On top of that, I produced my second film project with Wahoo, and I supported some awesome bike riders at Wardell Cycle Coaching to achieve their goals too. I

Unit 23 BMX, XC Bike Backflips and Ali C Hit The Roof!

In part 3 of Old Enough To Know Better presented by Wahoo, I hit Unit 23 with Ali C and Mark Ducat. I love riding skatepark, and although when training for XC the opportunity isn't always there, it's still great fun to get a chilled session in the park with friends. With 11 days until the British XC champs, Rab decides to mix things up. His physical shape is looking good - the numbers don’t lie - but what about the mental preparations? Riding an indoor skatepark might not see

Chasing KOM's at Glentress MTB Trail Centre - Old Enough To Know Better Episode 2

Who else loves a Strava segment? In episode 2 of Old Enough To Know Better presented by Wahoo I head back to Glentress and attempt to set a new Strava KOM on the Glentress Black Route. I set the current KOM in 2014, the last season I raced in a UCI World Cup. Can I beat it? 'With a name like Rab, it’s not a long shot to assume that being Scottish carries a lot of pride. Glentress was built in the late 90’s and has proven to be an iconic destination for riders from around the

Ben Lomond Big Mountain Riding

I thought I'd share some longer clips from riding Ben Lomond while filming for Old Enough To Know Better in the summer. Enjoy! If you're thinking about tackling a big mountain in Scotland here are some tips: Know the Scottish Outdoor Access Code. Ride responsibly, respect the environment and share the trails with other trail users. Ride within your limits. Things can get very serious quickly in remote areas and in the mountains. If in doubt, get off your bike and walk. Be pre

Old Enough To Know Better - Episode 1

I keep saying that the last 18 months have been a whirlwind. However, in actual fact, the last 21 years have been even wilder. In episode one of Old Enough To Know Better presented by Wahoo we go back in time to look at my local riding spot, my first ever mountain bike ride, and shine a spotlight on the bike shop and cycling club that helped me go from local youth bike races to Elite UCI World Cups in 4 years. I've made so many mistakes over the years, but it's been a blast.

Old Enough To Know Better presented by Wahoo

"To live without dreams is to live without joy. We all have dreams, hopes, and goals that spark inside the brain. Like a wax candle, they burn strong and bright initially, reaching and striving for oxygen, but as time goes on, the fire can begin to flicker as the fuel slows down, and other elements sway the balance of chemistry. Holding onto dreams, and keeping that fire burning is something to be celebrated. Yet, in an increasingly fast-paced world, our lives can be shaped a

Elba 2021 MTB Marathon World Championships

The last 18 months have been a surprise. In April 2020 we went into lockdown in Scotland. I had just left my job as a coach at Scottish Cycling to set up Wardell Cycle Coaching. With the enforced downtime, and new flexibility of schedule, I began consistently riding my bike for fitness for the first time in around 7 years. Later in the year I set my sights on reclaiming the West Highland Way record, and since then I've tried to maintain the consistency of training. I've gone

Elba World Champs Course Practice

The course on the Isle Of Elba was one of the hardest ever, with 4,900m of climbing and descending in 118km of racing. Take a rough and dusty ride on one of the longest downhills on course with me and Hans Becking. You can check out the rest of this ride on Strava. Rab

Photo Request: Have You Been Inspired To Tackle The West Highland Way?

This time last year I was preparing to try and conquer the world-famous West Highland Way by bike. In doing so I had two goals in mind: First of all, I wanted to reclaim the Fastest Known Time for mountain biking the long-distance, off-road route. Secondly, I wanted to inspire people to set their own challenges through producing a Record Attempt film with Cut Media and Wahoo Fitness. I would love to know if you were inspired to tackle the West Highland Way after watching our

Be Careful What You Wish For

I love racing in the rain. I've had some of my best results when it's cold, wet, and muddy. One of the races I'm most proud of is the 2013 World Cup in Albstadt, Germany. It was my first opportunity with Trek Factory Racing and I wanted to make a good impression. The course was slick with mud and I raced from a last row start, and a gridding of 125th, to finish 64th in the Elite Men's race. It's nothing compared to Tom Pidcock's performance at the same venue this year, but to

Bike Check: The Fastest Bike at Glentress 7!

The first outing for the new Santa Cruz Blur CC in the UK and the first win! It was amazing to swing my leg over Santa Cruz's new world cup ready XC race bike at Glentress 7. I've gone for an all-out XC race build, as opposed to the TR setup I rode on the West Highland Way last year. The latest generation of the Blur frame has seen some major advances in frame and suspension technology, resulting in a frame that weighs 289g less than my record-breaking bike. I really believe

The Downhiller's XC Bike? Or the Cross Country rider's DH bike?

I'm so stoked to announce that I'm a new brand ambassador for Crankbrothers and Muc-Off. To celebrate I took my Santa Cruz Tallboy for a rip down one of my favourite trails in Innerleithen, Scotland. Trail ridden - Second BASE Produced by Sleeper.Co IG - @rabwardell
